De Toneelmakerij gaat groen

Eerste Europese certificering voor duurzaam theater

Het ETC Theatre Green Book – een initiatief van het European Theatre Convention (ETC) netwerk van 63 theaters in 31 landen – biedt een Europees zelfcertificeringssysteem voor theaters om hun vooruitgang richting klimaatneutraliteit bij te houden. Dit systeem begeleidt theaters met gebruiksvriendelijke tools en calculators om duurzaamheid te integreren in producties, werkzaamheden (zoals catering, logistiek en reizen) en gebouwen. 

Georg Häusler, Directeur voor Cultuur, Creativiteit en Sport bij de Europese Commissie, zei: “For centuries European theatres have stood out as important community-building spaces, finding imaginative solutions and new narratives to address societal challenges. The ETC Theatre Green Book promises to be one of the references in the sector as it brings a number of actors together in creating common standards for sustainable Theatre and puts forward free and easy-to-use guide to reach theatres’ net zero emissions on and off stage by 2030.” 

Marjolein van Bommel, zakelijk leider bij de Toneelmakerij, legt uit: “Theater kan bijdragen aan bewustwording, maar we moeten ook zelf verduurzamen. Concrete stappen zetten is lastig omdat er zoveel te verbeteren valt. Waar begin je? Het Theatre Green Book helpt ons hierbij. Met de ETC-pilot onderzochten we hoe CO2-neutraal onze voorstellingen Science Fiction en Rijnreisje zijn. Beide zaten op baseline niveau, en Science Fiction zelfs op advanced. De komende jaren gaan we deze lessen toepassen op al onze voorstellingen en stellen we concrete doelen voor onze organisatie en ons gebouw.“

Stap voor stap richting duurzaam theater

Het ETC Theatre Green Book biedt vier niveaus van zelfcertificering: Preliminary, Basic, Intermediate en Advanced. Deze niveaus zijn gebaseerd op vooraf gedefinieerde doelen voor producties, gebouwen en werkzaamheden. De voorstellingen Rijnreisje en Science Fiction van de Toneelmakerij kregen de titel duurzame productie, waarbij de laatste is gecertificeerd op het hoogste niveau (advanced). 

Heidi Wiley, uitvoerend directeur van ETC, benadrukt: “There is no question that European theatres have the desire to become sustainable organisations. The issue is how to make this change happen in an effective and efficient way across an entire continent.   

The ETC Theatre Green Book, and the self-certification, are responses to calls from the sector through the Opole Recommendations, the road map to 2030 for European Theatres that was  concluded at the 2nd European Theatre Forum, initiated by the European Commission. This included a specific call to provide more visibility to the goal of becoming sustainble by setting common standards and references for when things are progressing. 

We believe that networks of theatres can play a crucial role in supporting our sector to overcome challenges and push themselves to become climate neutral. We’re incredibly excited to be partnering with Renew Culture and the Theatre Green Book to make sure this happens at scale across Europe.”  

Theaters kunnen de labels gebruiken op hun websites en promotiemateriaal om de voortgang van hun duurzaamheid te delen met publiek en beleidsmakers. Dit is een belangrijk onderdeel van de Sustainable Action Code en de belofte van het ETC-netwerk om tegen 2030 klimaatneutraal te worden.
